Poetry I Love

My Favorite Emily Dickinson Poem

“Hope” is the thing with feathers

Emily Dickinson

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –

That perches in the soul –

And sings the tune without the words

And never stops – at all –

And sweetest – in the Gale – is heard –

And sore must be the storm –

That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm –

I’ve heard it in the chillest land –

And on the strangest Sea –

Yet – never – in Extremity,

It asked a crumb – of me.

Dr. Ellefsen is one of my favorite modern-day poets. She writes about women’s empowerment, finding her voice, discovery, struggle, and victories. She has several books of lovely poetry on Amazon. This author inspires and motivates. I highly recommend reading her. Just click on her first book above, and it will take you to Amazon. Enjoy!

Wounded

Wounded and bleeding from the dark cellar of her spirit

A woman.

Broken

Beaten

Lost

How does such a woman discover the light once more?

Find her way back to who she was,

Or further yet,

Back to where she has never been,

To who she has never been.

To the self she always searched for

She begins in silence

 In silence she listens

 beyond the quiet To herself

Is she even still there?

She begins to doubt

her existence herself.

Her being

Her purpose

Was she ever there?

How long does she listen?

Light fades and returns

 Fades and returns

She waits

 still

Strains to hear herself

 The self within herself

Is she brave enough to wait?

Sit alone with herself

Completely alone

with her self

Alone

Completely alone

The word, the thought, transport her

 Can she brave the pain?

To be alone with herself and listen

Then… a wee spark has kindled

Not nearly a fire.

Alone WITH herself.

 If she is with herself,

She is not alone.

As gossamer as wings

The faint thought repeated

“she is with herself”

 I am with myself

 She tells herself,

the self she just found once again,

 As she would a friend,

a loved one,

a student,

a child,

“be gentle with yourself”

Sit together as long as you need,

As long as you both need.

Find yourself again,

Find yourselves again

Take all the time you need

And then…

And then…

SOAR!
